Black Easter Black Easter & The Day After Judgment,
James Blish

And here we have the book that I got my name from (those interested in such things may note that the difference between "Theron Ware," the anti-hero of Black Easter, and "Therion Ware" is an "I". In some ways this may be regarded as significant, particularly in light of the fact that "theron" is greek for "hunter" and "therion" is greek for "beast".).

"Both of the opposing sides in any war always predict victory," said Satan Mekratrig (but He would, wouldn't He?). Armageddon has arrived, through the offices of a megalomaniac arms dealer and an overly ambitious black magickian.

In one apocalyptic night, the major and minor devils of Hell are unleashed on the world, not for a specific comission, but to take their pleasure as they will. God, it appears, is vanquished. And the City Of Dis becomes confluent with the surface of the earth in the valley of death.

The Times Literary Supplement described this book as "powerful and chilling," which is high praise from the literary establishment for a work of science fantasy. Interesting magickal and theological perspectives from an author who knows what he's talking about. Or at least did. James Blish died in 1975, which is at the very least, something of a shame. .

Highly Recommended. but unfortunately out of print for a long time. I am actively seeking permission to include the text on this website, but only time will tell if that ambition is to be forfilled. (This was written in 1998, so you can see how that worked out!).

The Atrocity Archives

The Atrocity Archives.
Charles Stross.

UpNextPrev

When Charles Stross wrote the Atrocity Archives he gave rise to a whole new take on the Cthulhu Mythos and a whole new series of "SF" that is both very disturbing and very original. And also very funny. For a given value of funny. Imagine a world where eldrich horrors from beyond space-time are real, but governmental buracracy prevails with respect to countermeasures. The audible audiobook series is very good, and that's my prefered medium. I'd also recommend what's generally regarded as the precursor novel, though Charlie denies it, and as the author, presumably, is the authority on this. Charlie lives in Edinburgh and has a cat. ++Good.

A really necessary read.
Critique of pure reason Critique of Pure Reason , Kant.

In the Critique of Pure Reason, Immanuel Kant laid out a framework upon which the whole of modern philosophy is based. This Penguin Classics edition is translated from the German and edited with an introduction by Marcus Weigelt, based on the translation by Max Muller.

The book presents a profound and challenging investigation into the nature of human reason, its knowledge and illusions. Reason, Kant argues, is the seat of certain concepts that precede experience and make it possible, but we are not therefore entitled to draw conclusions about the natural world from these concepts. The Critique brings together the two opposing schools of philosophy: rationalism, which grounds all our knowledge in reason, and empiricism, which traces all our knowledge to experience. Kant's transcendental idealism indicates a third way that goes far beyond these alternatives.

Marcus Weigelt's lucid re-working of Max Muller's classic translation makes the Critique accessible to a new generation of readers. His informative introduction places the work in context and elucidates Kant's main arguments. This edition also contains a bibliography and explanatory notes.

Immanuel Kant (1724-1804), born in Königsberg, East Prussia, was the most prominent thinker of the German Enlightenment, and one of the most influential philosophers of all time. His comprehensive and profound thinking on aesthetics, ethics and knowledge has had an immense impact on all subsequent philosophy.
